In short

  • The portfolio is how the school follows your child's learning (article 18.º of DL 70/2021).
  • It must include your child's self-assessment and a written appraisal by the educator.
  • How often you send it is set in the protocolo, with at least one in-person session at the end of the year.
  • The tutor teacher's written summary reaches you within 10 working days of the meeting.

In Portuguese home education, the portfolio (portefólio) is the main way the school follows your child's learning. There are no report cards or termly tests in the non-exam years. Instead, you collect evidence, your child reflects on it, you add your own appraisal, and a tutor teacher at the school reads it and writes back. This guide covers the legal rules, what to include, and a practical structure you can copy.

What the law says

Article 18.º of DL 70/2021 sets four rules:1. Decreto-Lei n.º 70/2021, de 3 de agostoDiário da República

  1. The school monitors your child through the tutor teacher (professor-tutor), by discussing the portfolio, which "brings together the evidence of the learning achieved and its progress".
  2. Besides your child's self-assessment (autoavaliação), the portfolio comes with a written appraisal of the work done (apreciação do trabalho desenvolvido), written by the educator, and any other relevant material.
  3. You send the portfolio and documents to the school "with the regularity defined in the protocol", and the tutor reviews them in a joint meeting with your child and you.
  4. After the meeting the tutor writes an summary appraisal (apreciação síntese), "with any recommendations", which the director sends you within 10 working days.

The law defines the portfolio itself as the record of your child's curricular path, with documentation and evidence of work and learning "presented in varied formats", with reference to what the protocol sets.1

How often, and when

The law does not fix a frequency. It leaves it to the collaboration agreement (protocolo de colaboração), which must include at least one in-person session at the school at the end of the school year.1 The ministry's model protocol says the portfolio is sent at least 10 days before the meeting.3. Protocolo de colaboração no âmbito do ensino individual e do ensino doméstico: nota explicativa e minuta (DGEstE, August 2021)DGEstE (copy hosted by Arlindovsky blog) Some schools ask for it each term: one published protocol requires it at the end of every term, at least 10 days before the class council meets, plus a June meeting.4. Agree the dates when you negotiate the protocol, and put them in your calendar straight away. See The protocolo.

What to include

The law gives no fixed list beyond the self-assessment and the appraisal. Reading articles 4.º, 5.º, 7.º, 12.º and 18.º together, a complete portfolio covers:12. Decreto-Lei n.º 8/2025, de 11 de fevereiroDiário da República

Self-assessment in your child's voice

For a young child, a self-assessment can be a short conversation you write down, a drawing with a sentence, or a simple scale ("I can do this / I am learning this"). Ask the same few questions each time: what did you enjoy, what was hard, what do you want to learn next. Keep the child's own words.

The educator's appraisal

One or two pages is plenty. Describe what was covered, what went well, what needs more time and your plans for the next period. Link your comments to the evidence ("see the reading log, pages 4 to 6").

Example structure for a 2.º ano child

In 2.º ano there are no external tests; ModA and the end-of-cycle equivalence tests come in 4.º ano. See Exams at the end of 4.º ano. The subjects of the 1.º ciclo are Português, Matemática, Estudo do Meio, Educação Artística (visual arts, drama, dance and music), Educação Física, with Cidadania e Desenvolvimento and ICT as cross-curricular areas; English starts in 3.º ano.10. A portfolio for one term could look like this:

PartContent
1. CoverChild's name, 2.º ano, school of enrolment, tutor teacher, term covered
2. The term at a glanceHalf a page: main topics, projects, outings
3. PortuguêsEvidence by domain: Oralidade (a recorded retelling), Leitura e Escrita (a short text with the first draft and the corrected version), Educação Literária (reading log), Gramática (a worksheet)5. Aprendizagens Essenciais, Português 2.º anoDireção-Geral da Educação
4. MatemáticaEvidence by theme: Números, Álgebra, Dados e Probabilidades, Geometria e Medida, with a note on problem solving6. Aprendizagens Essenciais, Matemática 2.º anoDireção-Geral da Educação
5. Estudo do MeioA small project, for example a record of the seasons or a local walk, with photos and the child's notes
6. Educação Artística and Educação FísicaPhotos of art work, a short video of a song or play, a record of regular physical activity
7. Cidadania e DesenvolvimentoShort entries showing which dimensions were worked on (see below)
8. Self-assessmentThe child's reflection for the term
9. Educator's appraisalYour written appraisal
10. AnnexesCertificates, the tutor's last summary and your response to it

Tag each piece of evidence with the subject, the domain and, where useful, the Perfil dos Alunos competence areas (A to J), such as A for languages and texts or C for reasoning and problem solving.9. Perfil dos Alunos à Saída da Escolaridade ObrigatóriaDireção-Geral da Educação A tutor can then see quickly how the evidence lines up with the curriculum.

Cidadania e Desenvolvimento in the 1.º ciclo

The Aprendizagens Essenciais for Cidadania e Desenvolvimento apply from 2025/26 to all forms of schooling.7. Despacho n.º 10637-A/2025, de 9 de setembro (Aprendizagens Essenciais de Cidadania e Desenvolvimento)Diário da República Four dimensions are worked on every year: Direitos Humanos; Democracia e Instituições Políticas; Desenvolvimento Sustentável; Literacia Financeira e Empreendedorismo. Four others must be covered at least once during the 1.º ciclo: Saúde; Risco e Segurança Rodoviária; Pluralismo e Diversidade Cultural; Media.8. Aprendizagens Essenciais, Cidadania e DesenvolvimentoDireção-Geral da Educação A simple table in the portfolio, with one line per activity and the dimension it served, is enough.

Tips for unschooling and project-led families

The law gives flexibility of method, and an interest-led year can produce an excellent portfolio. The work is in translating real life into curriculum language.

Keep a learning log as you go. A photo and one sentence, the same day, is worth more than a reconstructed summary in June. Leaving everything to the end of the year is a common and stressful mistake.

Map activities to subjects afterwards. Once a week, go through the log and tag each entry. For example:

Real activitySubject and domainCidadania dimension
Baking bread, weighing and timingMatemática, Geometria e Medida; Português, Leitura e Escrita (reading the recipe)
Running a stall at a local marketMatemática, NúmerosLiteracia Financeira e Empreendedorismo
Growing vegetables and compostingEstudo do MeioDesenvolvimento Sustentável
Putting on a puppet show of a favourite bookPortuguês, Educação Literária; Educação Artística, drama
Visiting the junta de freguesiaEstudo do MeioDemocracia e Instituições Políticas
Cycling with road safety rulesEducação FísicaRisco e Segurança Rodoviária

Check against the real text. Before you finalise, open the Aprendizagens Essenciais for your child's year and confirm that each domain has some evidence.56 If a domain is thin, plan a short, focused activity for the next period.

Explain your approach once. A paragraph in the appraisal about how your family learns helps the tutor read the evidence in context.

When the meeting feels like an exam

Families have reported portfolios being treated as an assessment process rather than a record of learning.11. ANPED, submission to the Assembleia da República on constraints faced by homeschooling familiesAssembleia da República The law describes a discussion of the portfolio and a summary appraisal with recommendations.1 If a meeting turns into testing, stay courteous, note what happened, and raise it in writing afterwards with reference to article 18.º. See If things go wrong.

After the meeting

Within 10 working days you should receive the tutor's summary.1 Read the recommendations, decide what you will act on, and note it in the next portfolio. Over a cycle, this record of feedback and response shows steady, serious work, which is exactly what the school is there to confirm.
